Why does Bacillus subtilis fascinate me so much?

Because I want people to understand what an incredible wonder this tiny microorganism truly is.

Imagine holding a single Bacillus subtilis spore in your hand.

It measures only about one thousandth of a millimeter.

So tiny that millions of them could fit on the tip of your finger.

And yet every single spore contains the potential of a complete biological factory.

No factory made of steel.
No conveyor belts.
No robots.

And yet it contains hundreds of biological production lines.

The moment the spore awakens, it begins to work.

It produces not just a few substances but—depending on the strain and environmental conditions—an impressive variety of biological molecules.

What can this biological factory produce?

Biological tools for countless chemical reactions.

🛡️ Antimicrobial Compounds

Molecules used to compete with and defend against other microorganisms.

Including various B vitamins and, in suitable strains, vitamin K₂.

Not because of a single molecule.

But because every single spore carries the potential of a highly complex biological factory.

The more I learn about this microorganism, the greater my respect for it becomes.
