An extraordinary microbe. A clearly defined strain.
Our focus since 2012.
What makes Bacillus subtilis remarkable.
Spore formation, enzymes, communication and metabolism: a single bacterium contains an astonishing biological repertoire.
Survival through retreat.
Under unfavourable conditions, Bacillus subtilis can form a highly resistant spore – and later return to its active state.
A biochemical toolbox.
Bacillus subtilis is known for its broad enzymatic repertoire and can break down and transform numerous substances in its environment.
A cell does not act in isolation.
Chemical signals help bacteria sense their environment and adapt their behaviour to other cells and changing conditions.
A microscopic factory.
In its active state, the cell processes nutrients, produces metabolites and continuously responds to its immediate environment.
Not all Bacillus subtilis strains are alike.
The species name alone does not tell you which Bacillus subtilis strain you are dealing with.
Different strains.
Different characteristics.
That is why we do not look at Bacillus subtilis only at species level. Our focus is the specifically defined strain DSM 21097.
Why the strain mattersNot as many microbes as possible. One carefully selected strain.
One defined strain
Not merely Bacillus subtilis as a species name, but DSM 21097 as a clearly designated strain identity.
In spore form
The spore is the naturally resistant form of Bacillus subtilis and forms the basis of our products.
Controlled production
Cultivation, processing and filling take place under controlled conditions with traceable quality documentation.
One among many.
And interesting for precisely that reason.
The story of DSM 21097 goes back to microbiological research in the early 1990s. Extensive investigations examined numerous Bacillus strains for differences in their biological characteristics.
From this selection, the trail ultimately led to the strain now designated DSM 21097 and unambiguously deposited under this designation.

strain identity
What goes into the capsule should be traceable.
For a microorganism, the species name Bacillus subtilis alone is not enough for us. What matters is a clearly defined strain identity, traceable origin and controlled processing.
Defined strain identity
We use exclusively the clearly designated strain Bacillus subtilis DSM 21097.
Strain cultivation
Bacillus subtilis DSM 21097 is cultivated in Germany.
Spore material specification
The spore material used has a defined concentration of 30 billion colony-forming units per gram of pure material.
Controlled filling
Filling is carried out by an FSSC 22000-certified food production facility.
One microbe. One strain. A long history.
Those who want to explore further will find background information, research and films in the World of Subtilis. Those already familiar with DSM 21097 can go directly to our products.
